For all the Christians…
The Lenten Season is upon us! Today marks Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras or Poon Paregentan (if you’re Armenian). That means that tomorrow is the start of Lent.
Are you going to splurge tonight?
What is the purpose of Lent, anyways?
According to Wikipedia, “the purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer—through prayer, penitence, almsgiving and self-denial—for the annual commemoration during Holy Week of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events linked to the Passion of Christ and culminates in Easter, the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.”
Every year for Lent I do three things:
1. I sacrifice something I love. One year it was gum (last year), another all non natural sugars (senior year of high school- man that was tough!), the elevator to my fifth floor (result of walking up 5 flights a day was diesel legs), and yet another my afternoon naps (senior year of college).
I haven’t decided what I will do this year, but I am hoping that your comments inspire me!
2. I make sure to be a good Christian every single day. That usually translates to doing a special good deed every day, whether it is helping an older woman carry her groceries to the car, or telling my friend I love her friendship… or outfit.
3. I pray every day. I believe that one can pray from wherever she is. God can hear us! One year I attended daily mass for every day of Lent, and that was an amazing year for me (thank you for teaching me everything you know and for inspiring me, Elise!) but that is not possible for me this year. So I will pray at whatever moment I feel in the day, from wherever I am.
What do you do for the Lenten Season? What inspires you to sacrifice what you do, or add what you do?
My sacrifice has always been something that I feel I am too attached to and love very much. That way it is a true period of denial, and reminds me often of why I am in denial (read the wiki paragraph above). And I feel that Lent is the perfect time to thank Jesus for all that he has done for us, every single day, through prayer. And doing something nice? That should be a year-round goal, but sometimes we all become too self-involved without even realizing it.
I look forward to your answers!
And please read about my Real Simple chicken below- it was an AMAZING dish that you should all try!
